The Return of Chris Polcyn

October 16, 2020 Adam Jones
Chris Polcyn

Chris Polcyn

Crafting a slow and satisfying brand of hardware-based electronic music, Bay Area producer Chris Polcyn returns with the fresh new single “Meltdown.” Merging flavors of 90’s electronica with new age, acid house and dub, Polcyn’s easy-going, downtempo grooves and rich tones establish a signature sound all his own.

Warm bass-lines, house chords and classic 808 drum machine form a massive yet refined rhythm section for Polcyn’s catchy, re-pitched vocal melodies and vibrant synthesizers to shine. As he continues to innovate and push the boundaries of his techniques, Chris Polcyn delivers a beautifully relaxing dose of serotonin with “Meltdown.”

Channeling the soundscape building techniques of krautrock and ambient music greats, Austin-based experimental artist Michael C. Sharp is back with a new cosmic odyssey entitled “An Exquisite Aberration.” As Sharp’s prolific output of loop-based synth and guitar explorations continue to evolve, this song brazenly plunges even further into the abstract.

OUT NOW - Combining ambient 2-step rhythms with haunting sound design, Austin-based experimental dance producer VVV returns with the fierce protest song, “How Many Times.” Inspired by the surge in global authoritarianism and the ruthless crackdown on civil disobedience, VVV’s brooding composition is a stirring dive into both dramatic minimalism and political commentary.

The rising tension of looping vocal samples is heightened by VVV’s dark chord structures and atmospheric breaks, meant to echo the struggles of millions whose human rights have been and continue to be suppressed. Reaching for substance beyond the music, VVV uses his powerful beat craftsmanship to capture and portray the plight of the voiceless on “How Many Times.”

OUT NOW - Beautifully delving into the disillusion of life, Austin-based shoegaze ensemble Single Lash wryly commiserates on the futility of existence with their latest single “To Laugh.” Featuring members of Future Museums and Thousand Foot Whale Claw, Single Lash’s drab cynicism is met by their signature wall of effects-drenched guitar and luscious synthesizers, giving this track both tonal and conceptual complexity.

While the straightforward, disheartened lyrics take spotlight, Single Lash orchestrates a wide range of instrumentation including organ, violin and 12-string acoustic guitar to reveal nuanced and reflective shades of emotion. As they continue to evolve aesthetically as a musical unit, Single Lash divulges an elegant self-critique on their highly personal new piece “To Laugh.”
